One of my guilty pleasures is buying (too many) children’s books! Reading to your child not only supports language & cognitive development, but also provides a wonderful opportunity for bonding.

My child certainly has his favorites that he wants me to read to him over and over again. Every month, I love to switch up the books on his shelves. The June picture books list has books about summer, the beach, the pool, and of course, 4th of July!

And The Comes Summer by Tom Brenner is a beautifully illustrated story about summer adventures. From flip-flops and hide-and-seek to fireworks and ice-cream trucks, from lemonade stands and late bedtimes to swimming in the lake and toasting marshmallows, there’s something for everyone in this book. The lyrical and descriptive text is enjoyed by parents, while the kids enjoy all the ideas for summer fun. [Hardcover]

Summer by Ailie Busy simply describes all the different things that are signs of the summer season. Readers follow the children in this book as they enjoy summer with some indoor and outdoor play. [Board Book]

Also available in Spanish!

In Let It Shine by Maryann Cocca-Leffler you will see children enjoying many summer activities. The illustrations in this book include everything from a 4th of July celebration to a family camping experience. The simple text allows readers to identify all the familiar objects on each page. [Paperback]

It’s a Seashell Day by Dianne Ochiltree tells the story of a mother and son sharing a day of sand digging, seashell collecting, and seashore exploring. The rhyming text, counting, and information about seashells makes this a perfect beach book for toddlers. This book will inspire kids to start their own seashell collection this summer. [Hardcover]

In Summer Color by Diana Murray you will see beautifully illustrated nature scenes that capture all the colors of summer. In this celebration of the outdoors, two rambunctious children take off on an adventure from their own backyard. Readers will enjoy identifying every color in each new scene. [Hardcover]

Seashshore Sounds by Sam Taplin is just one of the many Usborne books in our collection. This sound book features seagulls calling, dolphins squeaking, and the gentle noise of the waves. My son enjoys pressing the spot on each page to hear all the fun and excitement of the seashore. The pages include brightly colored illustrations with cut outs and finger-trails to create a delightful interactive experience. [Board Book]

Books and stories open up a whole new world to your child. Take the opportunity to have conversations with them about the book you are reading. Make stories fun and engaging by changing your voice and making sounds. Do you have any favorite books that you’re reading during the summer months? Tell me about them!
