One of my guilty pleasures is buying (too many) children’s books! Reading to your child not only supports language & cognitive development, but also provides a wonderful opportunity for bonding.

My child certainly has his favorites that he wants me to read to him over and over again. Every month, I love to switch up the books on his shelves. The June picture books list has books about summer, the beach, the pool, and of course, 4th of July!

Please note: My son is currently 4 years old, so this book selection is primarily suitable for toddlers.

AND THEN COMES SUMMER

And The Comes Summer by Tom Brenner is a beautifully illustrated story about summer adventures. From flip-flops and hide-and-seek to fireworks and ice-cream trucks, from lemonade stands and late bedtimes to swimming in the lake and toasting marshmallows, there’s something for everyone in this book. The lyrical and descriptive text is enjoyed by parents, while the kids enjoy all the ideas for summer fun. [Hardcover]

JULES VS. THE OCEAN

In Jules Vs. the Ocean, Jules wants to build the biggest, most excellent sandcastle to impress her older sister. But, in a comical way, the waves keep destroying everything she creates. I enjoy reading this book with my child, because it is a lighthearted story about determination and finding joy in failure. [Hardcover]

LET IT SHINE

In Let It Shine by Maryann Cocca-Leffler you will see children enjoying many summer activities. The illustrations in this book include everything from a 4th of July celebration to a family camping experience. The simple text allows readers to identify all the familiar objects on each page. [Paperback]

IT’S A SEASHELL DAY

It’s a Seashell Day by Dianne Ochiltree tells the story of a mother and son sharing a day of sand digging, seashell collecting, and seashore exploring. The rhyming text, counting, and information about seashells makes this a perfect beach book for toddlers. This book will inspire kids to start their own seashell collection this summer. [Hardcover]

SUMMER COLOR

In Summer Color by Diana Murray you will see beautifully illustrated nature scenes that capture all the colors of summer. In this celebration of the outdoors, two rambunctious children take off on an adventure from their own backyard. Readers will enjoy identifying every color in each new scene. [Hardcover]

THE LITTLE ICE CREAM TRUCK

What kid doesn’t love the ice cream truck? In The Little Ice Cream Truck readers can follow the truck all over town to deliver everyone’s favorite flavor of ice cream on a hot sunny day. I love the rhyming lines and the illustrations are bold and fun with wide representation. [Hardcover]

A DAY AT THE BEACH

Day at the Beach by Tom Booth is about Gideon and his younger sister Audrey. Every summer they build a sandcastle together, but this summer Gideon wants to build a spectacular sandcastle all by himself. Several castles get destroyed, but he finally makes one that grabs everyone’s attention. He realizes something is missing. Day at the Beach at its core is about family relationships. In the end, Gideon discovers that building TOGETHER is more fun. [Hardcover]

Books and stories open up a whole new world to your child. Take the opportunity to have conversations with them about the book you are reading. Make stories fun and engaging by changing your voice and making sounds. Do you have any favorite books that you’re reading during the summer months? Tell me about them!
