One of my guilty pleasures is buying (too many) children’s books! Reading to your child not only supports language & cognitive development, but also provides a wonderful opportunity for bonding.

My child certainly has his favorites that he wants me to read to him over and over again. Every month, I love to switch up the books on his shelves. The Halloween picture books list includes books to practice counting as well as fun and classic rhymes. They are perfect for preschoolers because they are not scary, but still provide some Halloween fun.

IF YOU’RE SPOOKY AND YOU KNOW IT

If You’re Spooky and You Know It by Aly Fronis will have kids clapping along as you read it together. It’s a Halloween twist on the classic children’s song “If You’re Happy and You Know It”. The illustrations include classic Halloween characters like skeletons, Dracula, witches, mummies, werewolves, and Frankenstein. [Board Book]

COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN

In Countdown to Halloween by Greg Paprocki children learn to count down from 10 by finding objects hidden throughout the fall scenes on each page. These detailed scenes include a corn maze, a scary movie night, a magic show, and a hayride. I love how every time we read this book we can discover new details in each illustration. [Board Book]

THERE’s A WITCH IN YOUR BOOK

In There’s a Witch in Your Book by Tom Fletcher you will see how much chaos a messy witch can cause. Children engage with this book as they use their finger wand to make magic themselves. This witty story will have readers enjoying tidying up. I love that this book is interactive so kids can have fun with their powerful fingers. [Board Book]

THE WHEELS ON THE BUS AT HALLOWEEN

The Wheels on the Bus at Halloween by Sarah Kieley is a festive twist on the classic song. This bus has Halloween passengers that include pumpkins, witches, cats, and candy. The engaging illustrations are colorful and the front cover has peek-through windows. If your kid loves ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ then they will definitely enjoy this book. [Hardcover]

FIVE LITTLE PUMPKINS

Of course I had to include the book Five Little Pumpkins by Dan Yaccarino. It’s a classic nursery rhyme about pumpkins having some Halloween fun with their spooky friends. [Board Book]

This isn’t EXACTLY like the traditional rhyming book. Some verses are different, but I love how Five Little Pumpkins: A Fingers & Toes Nursery Rhyme Book by Natalie Marshall includes picture guides to help act out the song. [Board Book]

Books and stories open up a whole new world to your child. Take the opportunity to have conversations with them about the book you are reading. Make stories fun and engaging by changing your voice and making sounds. Do you have any favorite books that you’re reading during the fall months? Tell me about them!
