Summer is officially here! Fun pool and beach days also means being outside in the extreme heat. You may still want to wear makeup, but you don’t want to sweat it all off. Summer beauty is all about lightweight, dewy and waterproof. And even though SPF is supposed to be worn all year-round, it’s even more non-negotiable during the summer.

I’ve put together a list of some minimal summer makeup must-haves that will make your routine a whole lot simpler. These products will keep you looking flawless and fresh all season long!

Primer

Prepping your complexion with primer helps makeup last through a beach day, a picnic in the park and an afternoon laying by the pool. The Supergoop Glowscreen Sunscreen is a hydrating, makeup-gripping primer with SPF 40 and blue-light protection that has a pearlescent finish to leave skin luminous with an instant glow.

Makeup likes to move around when it’s hot, so the best way to avoid that is to wear less of it.

Concealer

Instead of wearing heavy foundation, lighten up your routine by only reaching for a concealer to blur imperfections. Dab on the waterproof Tarte Skin Treat Concealer to hide blemishes, redness and dark circles.

Tinted moisturizer/sunscreen

The EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 Tinted Face Sunscreen is perfect for sensitive skin because it is fragrance-free, paraben-free and does not clog pores.

The Tarte Sugar Rush Poreless Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 has an oil-free formula that helps keep shine under control. Both of these products are perfect for those who want to go foundation-free in the summer but still need sufficient coverage.

Setting Powder

The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder can be used on top of your concealer or tinted moisturizer. This powder is great if you need something to set your face makeup. It blurs imperfections and will reduce any shine you may get throughout the day.

Keep your makeup bag light by using multipurpose makeup, which means you can use a singular pigment on various places on the face.

Bronzer stick

Use the Beauty for Real Bronzer & Highlighter Stick to sculpt and warm the eyes and face. This bronzer and highlighter duo has a water-resistant and long-wear formula.

Blush

The HAN Cosmetics Multistick is a cleanly formulated multi-use stick that delivers a healthy looking flush of color for the cheeks, eyes and lips. (I use the color Innocence.)

Waterproof mascara

Avoid the raccoon-eye look by swapping in a waterproof version of your favorite eye product. The Lancome Monsieur Big mascara comes in a waterproof formula that doesn’t flake or smudge.

Brow pencil

No one wants smudgy eyebrows when they’re by the pool. The Smashbox Waterproof Brow Tech To Go Pencil & Gel Brush features a waterproof eyebrow pencil on one side and a soft-hold gel brow brush on the other. It’s the perfect product for giving you that natural-looking finish that stays in place.

Tinted balm

Swap out your lipstick for something more hydrating, like a tinted balm or lip oil to coat your lips with a gorgeous sheen. The MDSolarSciences Hydrating Sheet Tinted Lip Balm hydrates, tints, and protects your lips with SPF 30.

Finishing spray

If you need your makeup to last all day then you need the Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray. I’ve raved about this stuff before, and it is an absolute must have in my everyday makeup routine all year round—not just during the summer.

Looking to take your sun protection a step further? Seal your makeup with a setting spray that’s packed with SPF. Kate Somerville Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray (which has SPF 50) will lock your makeup in, while also creating a barrier between your skin and harmful rays.

A simplified summer beauty routine involves embracing the outdoor activities and feeling gorgeous with as few products as you can get away with.
